Trying to improve my traditional manga/anime. Is it working ?? >____>;;
This sketch was drawn at approximately 1:30 in the morning. it was based off of a conversation I had with my dad. I talked to him about how so many assumptions are made about "my group" (the kids who do well in honors math, science etc) and that it's really frustrating me. He told me about how when he was little all the other kids would basically laugh and mock him. He said that the other kids called him one particular name so much that he began to answer it. Back then it was assumed to be impossible for anyone around there to go to college. So to mock him for studying even though he probably wouldn't go to college (even my dad didn't think he could) the other kids would call him "大学生" which is "college student" because he probably wouldn't ever be able to become a college student.
My dad grew up on a farm in one of the poorer areas of China and was the youngest of six children. By the time he was born his mother had no more breastmilk so they crushed up rice and gave it to him. So obviously, he didn't get enough nutrients and was rather small compared to his brothers (four older brothers).
it was an interesting mental image nonetheless. My dad was a scrawny little kid with oversized hand-me-downs and with glasses later on because he had to work on the farm during daylight so he would use candles at night to study. and candlelight, regardless of how romantic, is not good for the eyes.
